Chesterfield, Michigan –  For the 7th consecutive year, Turbo Bowling Accessories hosted another successful edition of its Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo.

Collegiate Expo has become THE place for college coaches to scout talent. The event also provides a chance for high school bowlers to explore scholarship opportunities and a chance to learn from the best bowlers and instructors in the industry.

Game of Wickliffe in Wickliffe, Ohio played host from July 11-13, as nearly 200 students from 32 states, Mexico and Finland participated in the educational and competitive gathering. The event also welcomed more than 40 Collegiate coaches, the most ever to attend the Collegiate Expo.

“We can’t say enough how awesome it is to host an event like this for youth bowlers, parents and coaches,” said Lori Mraz, President of Turbo Bowling Accessories. “They inspire and invigorate us each summer with their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn about the sport.”

Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo provided both students and coaches with training from more than a dozen of the best coaches in the industry. Instructors consisted of PBA and PWBA champions, as well as USBC Silver and Gold Certified coaches. The event has also been embraced by industry experts as a showcase to provide technical information regarding their products.

“We come together once a year representing so many great brands, often time competing brands, for one primary cause, building future generations of bowlers,” said Mraz. “We’re proud of them all for taking time from their busy schedules to share their gifts and talents with the next generation of bowling super stars.”

The first two days involved instruction, both on-lane and in classroom settings. Day three  put student’s knowledge to the test in the annual Turbo Tech Audition Tournament, sponsored by Logo Infusion. The event concluded with an Open House that provided students, parents and coaches to meet and discuss college bowling programs and opportunities for scholarships.

The winners of the Audition Tournament were Paige Boyd of Lebanon, PA, and Parker Wilson of Pineville, NC (pictured above at center). Both Boyd and Wilson were awarded $350 SMART scholarships for their wins, and special awards from On The Ball Bowling.

An additional $700 was raised with a special raffle held on-site by Logo Infusion, with all proceeds going to back to the Audition Tournament scholarships fund. Carlene Beyer and Baily Gipson finished second and third respectively in the Girls Division, while Wyatt Smith and Matteo Cittadon took second and third in the Boys Division. Beyer and Smith earned $150 each for second place, while Gipson and Cittadon received $100 each for third.

Another big winner during the Collegiate Expo was Turbo’s charitable honoree, Ballard vs. The Big ‘C’ (BVBC). The group is led by PBA and USBC Hall of Famer Del Ballard, and Collegiate Expo Event Director Carolyn Dorin-Ballard.

To support the cause, a photo booth was sponsored by Columbia300, with Ebonite International staff members Jason Couch and Shannon Pluhowsky posing with nearly 200 attendees. Over $800 was raised for Ballard vs. The Big ‘C’ to continue research in cancer treatment.

“Del and Carolyn have been long time friends of Turbo for nearly two decades,” said Mraz. “It means a lot to our company and our family to give back and support to their cause.”

Mraz says that preparations are already underway for the 2018 edition. Dates have not been finalized, but Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo VIII will be held prior to the Junior Gold Championships in Dallas.

“We’ve received so many kind words and are very thankful to have the opportunity to give back to bowling in such a meaningful way,” she said. “The Collegiate Expo demonstrates our commitment to the sport and the growth of our industry.”

More Scholarships Awarded at Collegiate Expo VII

Turbo adds special on-site raffle thanks to event sponsor Logo Infusion that will be used to fund additional scholarships as part of this year’s Collegiate Expo, which will be hosted at Game of Wickliffe in Wickliffe, Ohio July 11-13, 2017.

Along with being the official jersey of the Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo, Logo Infusion will provide a professionally framed, shadow-box signed replica jersey of USBC Hall of Famer and Team Turbo staff member Carolyn Dorin-Ballard. All proceeds from the $5 raffle tickets will be designated for the 6-Game Audition Tournament held at the end of the Collegiate Expo.

“Logo Infusion has been a tremendous supporter of our event the past few years,” said Turbo President Lori Mraz. “They were very gracious last year coming up with the idea for the raffle, raising over $500 which we awarded back in scholarships.”

“We are honored to be part of such a well-run event focused on some of the most talented junior bowlers in the country,” said Ken Keegan, President of Logo Infusion. “We hope to continue our relationship with Turbo long into the future.”

“The raffle proceeds allow us to reward more players in the event,” said Mraz. “While the scholarships offered from the 6 game tournament aren’t a primary focus in our event, it is added incentive for students competing in our showcase, audition event.”

Keegan believes the raffle will definitely be bigger this year.

“This will be a collector’s item for one of the greatest female bowlers of all time,” he said.  “With Carolyn representing both Turbo and Logo Infusion around the country at numerous bowling events each year, it is fitting that we present one of her jerseys at the Collegiate Expo.”

Logo Infusion provides jerseys for both students and coaches at the Collegiate Expo. The jerseys are provided to each student based on grade level. Sophomores wear green jerseys, juniors wear blue, and seniors red, making their year of college eligibility readily known to college coaches in attendance.

“Our students love the jerseys they receive as part of their registration,” said Mraz of the estimated 200 student-athletes. “They all wear them during the Audition Tournament and the sea of color is really quite an impressive showing.”

The Audition Tournament is the culmination of two full days of on-lane and classroom instruction with some of the best coaches and professional athletes in the sport. Turbo’s team of certified coaches and professionals include PBA and PWBA Champions, Hall of Famers and USBC Certified Coaches.

Registration officially closes May 31, and spots are filling quickly for the maximum capacity of 210 players. Students should be enrolled in High School grades 10-12 for 2017-2018 school year, or be a 2017 graduate. A minimum entering average for boys of 190 and girls of 175 is suggested for greatest recruiting consideration.

Johnson & Ciminelli to Join Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo Coaching Team

U.S. Open champions Liz Johnson and Ryan Ciminelli have been added to the coaching staff for the 2017 Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo in Cleveland on July 11-13.

Johnson, a five-time U.S. Women’s Open champion, and Ciminelli, the 2015 U.S. Open winner, are part of an extensive list of coaches and presenters at the event, which will be hosted at Game of Wickliffe, in Wickliffe, Ohio.

“I’m really looking forward to being part of the Collegiate Expo this year,” said Johnson, a USBC Hall of Famer. “The experience I had bowling in college helped develop me into the bowler I am today. I hope to share that experience and knowledge with our students.”

Both Johnson and Ciminelli are from the Buffalo, N.Y. area, and bowled collegiately before seeing professional success. Johnson was both Rookie of the Year and Collegiate Bowler of the Year at Morehead State University, while Ciminelli was a two-time National Junior College Athletic Association All-American at Erie Community College.

“Liz and Ryan bring a tremendous amount of talent and energy to the Collegiate Expo,” said Lori Mraz, President of Turbo Bowling Accessories. “Their perspectives and insight into the sport are a welcome addition to the event.”

Johnson and Ciminelli will be part of an elite group of players, coaches and industry experts gathered for the 2017 Collegiate Expo. Students will receive two full days of on-lane and classroom instruction, and will test their skills in the 6-game Audition Tournament.

Bowlers Get Chance to Win Entry into Collegiate Expo VII

Registration is now OPEN for the second annual Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo Challenge.  The Collegiate Expo Challenge is an affordable opportunity for high school bowlers to compete and earn valuable SMART scholarships (Michigan residents-points) toward college.  In addition to scholarships, ALL participating students will have the opportunity to WIN a FREE ENTRY into the 2017 Collegiate Expo where they will work with some of the best professionals and coaches in the sport.  One Entry in each the Male and Female Divisions will be awarded, a $389 value.   The Collegiate Expo Challenge is made possible through the added support and contributions of the Frank Gavie Youth Committee which provides additional funding and support to youth programs throughout the state of Michigan.   Entries are limited to 102 bowlers. Turbo Announces Multi-Year Sponsorship Agreement with Kegel

Turbo has announced a multiyear contract extension of its sponsorship agreement with Kegel. The agreement will position Kegel as the title sponsor of the Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo Collegiate Coaches Dinner Reception through 2020.

“Turbo and Kegel have been great friends and allies for many years,” said Turbo President Lori Mraz. “We are delighted to solidify a long-term partnership agreement with Kegel.”

The Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo debuted in 2011, and has become one of the premier events for prospective collegiate bowlers and coaches. Growing in both size and scope in each successive year, the event will attract more than 200 bowlers, high school and collegiate coaches. This year’s Collegiate Expo is scheduled for July 11-13 at Game of Wickliffe in suburban Cleveland.

“The synergy between Kegel and Turbo is a perfect fit,” said Chris Chartrand, President and CEO of Kegel. “We’ve been strategically aligned with Turbo since our existence. Kegel is extremely focused on competitive bowling and our interests are very much aligned with Turbo’s.”

The sponsorship agreement will also see the Turbo Tech Training Facility in Chesterfield, MI become one of the first to install Kegel’s new Specto Bowling System. Specto was unveiled at International Bowl Expo in 2016, and will be utilized at Turbo Tech as a coaching tool to measure all phases on ball motion on the lane.

“Specto uses Lidar technology, which is the same technology used in self-driving vehicles,” said Chartrand. “Specto’s sensors are measuring a bowler’s delivery every six inches. So not only can we measure where the ball is from the foul line to the pin deck, but also how the ball is moving through the pins.”

Bowlers will be able to see their performance evaluation from up to 35 different types of information with precision accuracy from one single shot. Users can see their performance evaluation and focus on their weak points with online tips from our coaches.

“You can compare your speed, rev rate and accuracy against the top bowlers in the world,” said Chartrand. “With Turbo Tech installing the system, we’ll be able to bring more bowlers closer to our game through instruction and innovation.”

Mraz says that with this sponsorship, Turbo and Kegel will continue together to promote bowling as a competitive and lifetime sport.

Turbo Joins with the International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame for New Fundraising Campaign

posts-sustainingmembershipTurbo Bowling Accessories, in conjunction with the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame (IBM/HF), announces a new initiative to aid in fundraising efforts for the Hall.

IBM/HF has launched a new fundraising campaign called the Sustaining Membership Program, which has simplified donating to the Hall. Previously, the IBM/HF had separate membership programs for corporations and individuals with many different levels of contribution.

In addition to adding more realized benefits for members, there are now only five levels of membership. This makes donating simple and more affordable to a broader range of people and organizations. Memberships start as low at $29 per year and may be tax deductible.

“The Hall works diligently to collect, preserve and research bowling’s history,” said Lori Mraz, President of Turbo Bowling Accessories. “Turbo wants to do its part to help in providing a suitable home to showcase bowling’s history and valued treasures.”

As a part of the Sustaining Membership Program, donors who contribute at the $199 level or higher will receive a Collector’s Bowling Pin that recognizes the year’s PBA and USBC Hall of Fame inductees.

“I think the new Collector’s Bowling Pin is pretty cool,” said Mraz. “It’s definitely something nice to display in an office, man cave or wherever bowling fans like to show off their bowling memorabilia.”

Mraz, a IBM/HF trustee since 2008, notes that one of the Hall’s most challenging initiatives is converting a vast archive for bowling films to digital format. These films include archives of tournament competition, as well as one-of-a-kind rarities in the IBM/HF archive. The cost of having these films upgraded is estimated at more than $200,000.

“Much of the historic material we have exists in out-of-date formats, and is decomposing in storage canisters,” said Mraz. “There is more than a half-million feet of film that needs to be digitized, and if we don’t act soon, the collection will disintegrate and be gone.”

As part of IBM/HF’s year-end membership drive, Turbo is offering a chance for any person or business who becomes a Sustaining Member at $199 or above to spend the day with USBC and PWBA Hall of Famer Carolyn Dorin-Ballard. A USBC Silver Certified Coach, Dorin-Ballard could be available for a full-day lesson. A center owner or bowling retailer could use her services to run a clinic or for a meet-and-greet session with customers for the day. Turbo will cover all travel expenses and appearance fees associated with Carolyn’s visit.

Team Turbo’s Jesper Svensson Wins WBT Thailand Title

21-year-old two-hander claims fifth PBA Tour title, third of 2016 season.
Jesper Svensson of Sweden, a 21-year-old left-handed two-handed player, became the first three-time Professional Bowlers Association Tour titlist of 2016 Friday when he defeated Australia’s Sam Cooley, 237-213, to win the WBT Thailand title at Blu-O Rhythm and Bowl Siam Paragon.

Svensson, who became the youngest player to win the PBA FireLake Tournament of Champions earlier in the year, also won the WBT Brunswick Euro Challenge in Munich, Germany, in March. The Thailand victory was his fifth PBA Tour title and his third World Bowling Tour title in two years. Svensson also won the 2015 WBT Kingdom of Bahrain Open and the PBA Chameleon Open on his way to being selected as PBA’s 2015 Rookie of the Year.

Svensson, who clinched the top qualifying berth for the eight-player modified stepladder finals with a 300 game in his final qualifying game, locked up the victory with three strikes in the 10th frame to counter Cooley’s ninth-10th frame double. Along with his title, Svensson earned one 1 million Thai baht, or roughly $32,260 U.S. dollars.

PBA Tour players will return to the U.S. next week to resume the chase for the $10,000 winner-take-all prize in the Xtra Frame PBA Tour Series. The PBA Xtra Frame Gene Carter’s Pro Shop Classic at Mid-County Lanes in Middletown, Del., is set for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 20-21, offering a projected $15,000 first prize and a PBA Tour title to the winner if he/she is a PBA member. U20 Champions crowned at 2016 Junior Gold Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – Jacqueline Evans of Acton, Massachusetts, and Jeffery Mann of West Lafayette, Indiana, captured the 20-and-under titles at the 2016 Junior Gold Championships presented by Storm, Roto Grip and Master.

The championship rounds, held at Western Bowl, consisted of two games with total pinfall determining the winner, and were broadcast on CBS Sports Network on Tuesday.

The U20 girls’ title match required more than 20 frames to complete as Evans and Haley Cummings of Huber Heights, Ohio, tied after two games before Evans won in a ninth and 10th frame roll-off, 45-39.

Jackie Evans is an alumni of the Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo 2013 who will be junior at Lawrence Tech this fall.

I honestly couldn’t believe it,” said Evans, a 20-year-old who will be a junior at Lawrence Tech this fall. “I had to walk away for a second when I realized the chance was still there. Striking in the 10th was an unreal feeling. I bowl in the anchor spot in college, so I’ve gotten used to the pressure. It was a feeling I wanted to have, and that’s when I get my adrenaline going and make quality shots. This was a great week”.

Danielle’s Victory at the 2016 PWBA Wichita Open

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

Fortunately, for Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, not only was she good, she also had a certain lucky charm in attendance to help her to victory at the 2016 Professional Women’s Bowling Association Wichita Open.

McEwan, who earned the No. 1 seed for the TV finals on the strength of a 1,543 match-play pinfall total, struck in five of the first seven frames en route to defeating Maria Jose Rodriguez of Austin, Texas, 210-171, at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley for her second career PWBA title.

Rodriguez was clean through four frames until she left a 4-6 split in the fifth, followed by a 7-10 split in the seventh frame, which stopped her momentum and left her trailing by 52 pins. A split in the eighth frame from McEwan could’ve made things interesting, but Rodriguez was unable to double in the ninth frame to put pressure on McEwan.

“Being the No 1 seed is hard,” McEwan said. “You come out and have one game, and if its close or the other person shoots a big game, it almost feels like your hard work to get there is almost for nothing.”

McEwan’s rise to the top seed was not an easy one. With three games to go during the cashers’ round June 4 at Wichita’s Northrock Lanes, she found herself in 27th place, still searching for a consistent look on the challenging 41-foot Sport-Bowling lane condition and well outside the upcoming cut to the top 12 for match play.

In danger of missing her first match-play cut of the season, McEwan switched balls, made a slight adjustment and rolled games of 269, 237 and 247 for a 753 series, which allowed her to claim the 12th and final spot for match play.

From there, McEwan took things to another level, posting an 823 set for the first three games of match play and 1,099 for the first four.

“When I bowl, I try not to look at the scores too much for that reason,” said McEwan, who won the 2015 Smithfield Tour Championship for her first PWBA title. “I just try to stay within myself, and as far as I’m concerned there’s always hope I can figure it out. That’s really paid off for me this year. There have been a lot of times I’ve been able to shoot a big game and put myself back in position, where if I was really counting, I’d be putting more pressure on myself.”

Rodriguez, the No. 2 seed, earned her spot in the final match by defeating Syaidatul Hamidi of Malaysia, 218-180. Rodriguez was clean in the win, while Hamidi had two opens and struggled with pin carry.

In the opening match, Hamidi doubled in the 10th frame, on the strength of an eighth-frame ball change, to knock off No. 4 seed Shannon Pluhowsky, 190-180.

Pluhowsky, who finished the match first, spared in the ninth frame and needed to double and get nine pins to shut out Hamidi. She began the 10th frame with an eight-count spare, followed by a strike, which allowed Hamidi the chance to win the match.

While McEwan is more than capable of winning on her own, considering her overall skill level, fundamentals and knowledge of the game, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have a good luck charm in the crowd when competing. McEwan’s mother, Susan Varano, was in attendance and now has witnessed McEwan’s first two PWBA titles in person.

“It means the world to have her here,” said McEwan, whose 823 in match play was the first 800 series by any player since the re-launch of the PWBA Tour in 2015. “All the Team USA girls tease her and say she’s my good-luck charm. She always shows up at the right moments. Sometimes, it’s going badly and we put her in the corner, but it always turns around. She wasn’t there when I made the show at the Queens (2016), and I didn’t win, so I’m going to make sure she gets a plane ticket when I make a show from now on.”

The moment was not lost on Varano, who may want to give McEwan a cardboard cutout of herself as an early birthday present, just in case she’s unable to make future TV finals. But for the PWBA Wichita Open finals, Varano had a front-row seat for her daughter’s second professional title and she’s had a lifetime first-class seat for McEwan’s growth from youth bowler to collegiate star to PWBA standout.

“It’s just unbelievable pride,” Varano said. “I see how much she works at this. I see it day in and day out with what she eats, what she drinks and what she reads. She lives this. This is what she wants. After watching Kelly and Liz and Shannon and Stefanie and all of the best for all of these years, and to all of a sudden hear her name with them, it’s a great feeling.”

All qualifying and match-play rounds of the PWBA Wichita Open were held at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kansas, on June 3-4.

The stepladder finals were held June 26 at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in conjunction with the Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship and the finals of the Pepsi PWBA Lincoln Open and PWBA Greater Detroit Open.

The Go Bowing PWBA Players Championship finals aired live on CBS Sports Network, while the Lincoln Open and Greater Detroit Open will air on CBS Sports Network on July 12 and July 19, respectively.
