Turbo Signs PWBA Player of the Year Liz Johnson

Johnson-Liz
Elysia Current also added to Women’s Pro Staff

2016 is looking like a very good year for Turbo Bowling Accessories; made even better by the signing of two of the brightest stars on the new Professional Women’s Bowling Tour, PWBA Champions Liz Johnson and Elysia Current.

Johnson, the 2015 PWBA Player of the Year and current Women’s U.S. Open Champion, joins the list of more than 30 great women bowlers on the Turbo Staff.

I am very excited about joining the Turbo team,” said Johnson.  “They have a great history and I am very honored to be a part of the ‘family.’ Thanks to Lori Mraz and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard for all their help. I am looking forward to representing Turbo on the 2016 Tour and around the world.”

The U.S. Open was Johnson’s 4th major title to go along with her 10 standard pro titles. She started her pro career as the 1996 PWBA Rookie of the Year, and she was named Player of the Year by the Bowling Writers Association of America (now IBMA) in 2005 and 2007.

As an amateur, Johnson was named the Alberta Crowe Star of Tomorrow, and she was an All American and MVP during her college years at Morehead State University. She is an 11 year member of Team USA and a member of the team that recently won the 2015 World Bowling Women’s Championships in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Elysia Current, the Head Bowling Coach at Delaware State University, launched her professional career in 2015 by winning the first tournament of the new PWBA Tour, the PWBA Storm Sacramento Open. Prior to that sensational start, she finished second in the 2011 USBC Queens, and she was an All American at both Wichita State University and Fairleigh Dickinson University in her college years. She was named College Bowler of the Year by the IBMA in 2004.

Liz is a proven leader, and no doubt one of the greatest female champions of this generation,” said Turbo President Lori Mraz. “Her dedication to the sport both on and off the lanes is admirable. Elysia brings us a direct connection to both the professional and college ranks, and she is a great example and inspiration for future generations. We look forward to working with both of these great ladies in our Turbo Driven to Bowl Clinics and many other areas.”

Turbo remains steadfast in its commitment to Women’s Professional Bowling as proven by many years of sponsorship of the Women’s US Open, prior sponsorship of the PWBA and LPBT Tours and confirmed Registered Product Partnership with the New PBA Tour.

Other PWBA National Player Staff members include Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, Danielle McEwen, Diandra Asbaty, Leanne Barrette-Hulsenberg, Lindsay Boomershine, Anne Marie Duggan, Sandra Gongora, Clara Guererro, Brittni Hamilton, Kayla Johnson, Megan Kelly, Marsha Klompken, Shannon Pluhowsky, Lucy Sandelin, Mary Wells, Kristina Wendell, and Diana Zavjalova.

6th Annual Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo Gears Up for Indy

2016-Coll-Expo-post

In only five short years, the Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo has become bowling’s undisputed best college recruiting event.

In 2016, the 6th edition of this prestigious event will be held at Western Bowl in Indianapolis, Indiana, July 12-14. And since Western Bowl has 80 lanes and plenty of meeting space, the number of spots available has been expanded to its largest field yet of 204 student bowlers.

Turbo Regional Sales Manager and Pro Staff Coordinator Carolyn Dorin-Ballard will again serve as Event Director. “I am confident we will fill the event again this year,” said Dorin-Ballard. “Last year, (with 168 spots available) we had 44 kids on a waiting list. We’ve been getting calls the past couple of months from parents eager to sign up for this year’s event. It’s exciting and rewarding, and it shows that what we’re doing is making a difference.”

General Manager Jim Doty is looking forward to hosting the 2016 Collegiate Expo. “Royal Pin and Western Bowl is honored to be chosen to host this awesome event,” he said. The Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo is, in my opinion, the best event in the country to help our young adult bowlers improve their game and by doing so helps to continue the ‘Sport of Bowling’.”

Dorin-Ballard and Turbo President Lori Mraz are going all out this year to make sure that every student athlete in attendance gets all of the attention they deserve both in the classroom seminars and during on-the-lane instruction. From USBC Gold and Silver certified instructors, PBA Tour Champions, Team USA veterans, PWBA contenders, Collegiate All-Americans and industry experts, the collective team of coaching representatives is impressive.  Turbo coaches returning this year in addition to Dorin-Ballard are Diandra Asbaty, Lindsay Boomershine Jeff Carter, Jason Couch, Tim Mack, Shannon Pluhowsky, Bill Spigner, Jordan Vanover, and world respected Sports psychologist Dr. Dean Hinitz.

Because of expanded student registration, new coaches Josh Blanchard, Hank Boomershine, Tom Carter, Ryan Ciminelli, Ron Hatfield, Ronnie Russell and Dave Wodka have been added.

Another improvement this year includes limited one-hour classroom seminars so students will get more time to put what they learn into practice on the lanes. “We have learned over the years that students want to bowl and bowl,” said Dorin-Ballard, “So we’re making sure that we schedule the seminars and on-lane segments so that students get the much wanted on-lane time with coaches but also the reasonable break periods needed, and that are important, for them to perform physically and mentally.”

No event of this magnitude would be possible without sponsors, and Turbo is proud the sponsor partnerships it has developed over the past six years.  Returning in 2016, and with enhanced sponsorship, “Columbia and Hammer are stepping up again in 2016 sponsoring our photo booth and registration bags,” said Mraz. “Logo Infusion will once again be the sponsor of the Audition Tournament and provide an event jersey to all student bowlers. Our partnership with Bowlers Journal will again allow every student to receive a one year paid subscription to the magazine. Storm will be sponsoring our Round Table for Collegiate Coaches; and will coordinate a presentation on Building a Team Arsenals with other ball companies while Kegel will sponsor and host our College Coaches Dinner on Wednesday evening.  We couldn’t be more pleased with the enthusiastic support of all of our sponsors.

Space is limited.  This event will SELL OUT!  So REGISTER early!  Save $30 during Early-Bird Registration Now – April 30th. Additional questions, please call Turbo directly at 800-530-9878, Monday-Friday, 8:30a-5p Eastern or e-mail Event Administrator, Megan Bernhardt, mbernhardt@turbogrips.com.

Turbo Signs Two Of Bowling’s Brightest Stars

Cczerbinski-and-Ciminelli

With the PBA World Series of Bowling on the near horizon, Turbo Bowling Accessories has signed two of Bowling’s brightest stars to its world renowned professional staff.

2015 U.S. Open Champion Ryan Ciminelli and John Szczerbinski have found much success in bowling using Turbo Products, and both are also highly respected on tour for integrity and outstanding character. They are the newest of more than 400 top bowlers around the world representing the Turbo Bowling Accessories brand.

The Turbo brand is built upon innovation and quality which is sustained by integrity and commitment.  Our pro staff is an extension of those values,” said Turbo President Lori Mraz.   “We’re delighted to welcome Ryan and John to our team.   They’re developing into professionals at the highest level of our sport.   We look forward to watching them continue to shine under the Turbo brand.”

Ciminelli, from Cheektowaga, New York, now owns four PBA Titles after winning his first major crown at the recent U.S. Open in Garland, Texas. He won the PBA Xtra Frame South Point Open earlier this year in Las Vegas. He joined the tour in 2007, and now is following in the footsteps of some of the sports top players like Mike Aulby, Jason Couch, and his idol Parker Bohn III.

I’m very excited to be a part of such a great team,” said Ciminelli. “The Turbo pre cut thumb tape grew on me instantly. I also love the black tape roll for wrapping my fingers. Using these accessories I will never have to worry about soreness or any cutting on my hand. I can’t wait to sport the turbo logo on the lanes.”

Szczerbinski, Tonawanda, New York, made his mark as an All-American and NationalChampion at Wichita State University and as a five time member of Team USA. He joined the tour in 2010 and is considered one of its rising stars. He finished second in the 2015 PBA Kingdom of Bahrain International Championship, and is poised to win his first PBA title and perhaps many more in the near future.

I would like to thank Lori Mraz, Chris Sand, and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard for reaching out to me and giving me this opportunity,” said Szczerbinski.  “It’s an honor to be given this chance to build a long and successful relationship with Turbo.”

Aliyah Alleyne
Age: 12

You may recall Aliyah Alleyne as the poker-faced competitor bowling for the U12 title at the 2015 Junior Gold Championships on CBS Sports Network, as seemingly unfazed by open frames as she was unimpressed by strikes. Alleyne fell short that day, finishing runner-up, but her impressive résumé suggests she is destined to rise in the years ahead. The Mooresville, N.C., resident began bowling competitively at age nine and quickly scored a runner-up finish in the North Carolina State Pepsi Youth Championships in 2012. This year, she won a scholarship tournament at George Pappas Victory Lanes in June. Off the lanes, she is a member of the choir at Pinnacle Church of God in Christ, plays violin and piano, and is an honor student at East Langtree Charter Academy.

Derick Holmes
Age: 19

One of the biggest splashes Derick Holmes made on the national scene occurred when he was named the 2014 Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow, an honor that earned the Wichita, Kan., teen a $6,000 scholarship and recognition for his extraordinary record both on and off the lanes. A Boy Scout for 12 years, Holmes became an Eagle Scout in 2010 and maintained a 4.0 GPA at Wichita Southeast High School while also excelling on the lanes, making two consecutive appearances on the Dexter High School All-American Team in 2013 and 2014. Now entering his sophomore year at Wichita State University, where he is studying business management and human resources management, Holmes logged a high series of 787 in his first year as a Shocker.

Sierra Kanemoto
Age: 19

This two-time Dexter High School All-American out of Riverside, Ohio, enjoyed two third-place and two second-place finishes at the Teen Masters between 2010 and 2014 before emerging as a national star with her U20-Division victory at the 2015 Junior Gold Championships in June. Though she struggled out of the gate in her U20 title match against Breanna Clemmer under the national spotlight of CBS Sports Network, she recovered with a 232 to secure a 401-385 victory. Prior to joining the Wichita State Shockers starting with the 2014-15 season, Kanemoto helped the Stebbins High School bowling team to three conference championships while also nabbing the Ohio High School Singles title in 2012. In her Freshman year with WSU, where she is studying biological sciences, she logged a high series of 790.

Koivuniemi enters coaching role, Fagan pursues Masters Degree

With the U.S. Open Tournament right around the corner, Turbo Bowling Accessory Products President Lori Mraz and Director of Player Staff Carolyn Dorin Ballard have made some moves to beef up the group that includes representatives from regional, national and international, PBA and PWBA.

New on the world respected Turbo Staff is PBA Champion Ronnie Russell. He now owns three PBA titles after adding the PBA Badger Open this year. He also finished second in the 2015 PBA Players Championship after tying Parker Bohn III in the championship match and losing in the two frame rolloff.

Matt McNeil has been on the staff for a few years as an amateur, but has been promoted to the Touring Pro Staff after turning pro. He anchored the Dead Money Team to win the Inaugural PBA Team Challenge in the recent PBA Fall Classic in Las Vegas. He is also in contention to win the PBA Holman Roth Doubles with partner Anthony Pepe. The finals will be held December 19 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno. His last title as an amateur was the 2015 USBC Open Championships All Events title with a huge 2226. It was his 4th USBC title at age 30.

Returning to the Tour Staff is 44 year old Dave Wodka, who has returned to the tour full time while also representing Ebonite as a District Sales Manager. “I was with Turbo from 1994-2000 and it is great to be back with such a wonderful company,” he said. “Lori and Dave do a great job for the bowling industry and it is an honor to be back on the Turbo Pro Staff.”

Says President, Lori Mraz, “Our brand is regarded for quality and innovation.   Our professional staff is an extension of those values. We’re delighted to welcome these new athletes to our team and continuing to inspire future generations.’

In other Turbo Staff news, Mika Koivuniemi will remain on the International Player Staff as he assumes the role of Head Coach in the United Arab Emirates, and PBA Champion Mike Fagan, a member of the National Player Staff, will cut his tour schedule back to part time as he pursues his Masters Degree from the University of California Berkley.

5th Annual Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo Rocks Chicago

LG_Tournament-Action
By any measure, Collegiate ExpoV was a smashing success!

The Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo keeps growing . . . and growing . . . and getting stronger. Each year, more student bowlers discover the merit and value that the event offers, and parents are getting tuned in to the opportunity to help their student bowlers choose the right college; especially if they have the chance to earn scholarships and be a part of a college bowling program.

Not to mention that more colleges are getting involved and becoming a part of America’s best college recruiting event. College participation at Town and Country Lanes in Joliet, Illinois July 8-10 was up from 27 last year to 36 this year; and once again, the event was sold out in advance to 168 students athletes from 27 states and two foreign countries.

Tom Falbo is the head coach at Pennsylvania’s St. Francis University. He had this to say in a note to Turbo Bowling Accessories President Lori Mraz following the event:

If there was a more appropriate way to express my appreciation for the Turbo Collegiate Expo other than saying a heartfelt thank you, I would share it with you at this time.

You’ve created such a special atmosphere and experience for these young players and their families. With life being a collection of memories, yours is such a positive experience for these kids that they can treasure for many years to come.

Your event has been such a strong resource for me and the list of high character players and families I’ve been able to recruit has been stellar.

It’s been such a pleasure getting to know you and your staff. They really impress me how connected they are to your goals and passionate they are about what they do.”

It is praise like that that makes Mraz and her incredible staff so proud to produce this iconic event, and it makes them more determined to keep it going and improve it every year.

Although a couple of regular coaches were unavailable because of the World Bowling Tour Tokyo event, the list was as impressive as ever. It included, Event Coordinator Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, Jeff Carter, Diandra Asbaty, Jason Couch, Lindsay Boomershine, Bob Learn Jr., Shannon Pluhowsky, Amleto Monacelli, Bill Spigner, Mike Shady, Jordan Vanover, Tim Mack, and world renowned mental coach Dr. Dean Hinitz.

Student bowlers and their parents were treated to three days of classroom and on-the-lanes instruction, and there was ample time for social interaction, casual and serious discussions with the college coaches and recruiters; not to mention technical info from the industry’s leading ball companies, and special bonuses from other sponsors; like a free jersey for every bowler from Logo Infusion, and incentives to students who downloaded the bowlers app from Rolltech during the event ending Audition Tournament.

Congrats to winners Rudolfo Monacelli and Julia Huren for winning the event. Each earned a $250 scholarship award.

It almost goes without saying that the Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo continues to be one of Bowling’s crown jewels because it gets the support and backing from great sponsors. This year, they included 900 Global, BBB Inc./Kids Bowl Free, Bowlingball.com, Brunswick, Columbia 300, DV8, Dexter, Ebonite, Hammer, IAB, Joliet Chamber of Commerce, Kegel, KR Strikeforce, Logo Infusion, Motiv, OnTheBallBowling.com, Roto Grip, Storm, Team USA, Track, Turbo, and the Metro Detroit and Chicagoland USBC.

For additional information and results, please visit the About Collegiate Expo section. For additional info on products and services offered by event sponsor Logo Infusion, visit www.logoinfusion.com. A complete listing of colleges participating in the 2015 Collegiate Expo can also be found on the Turbo website.
